Being ‘successfully depressed’ presents additional challenges:

  • the incessant thought that you should’ve settled for a ‘normal’ career
  • increased visibility to others when we’d prefer not to be seen for fear of being found out
  • family and friends who don’t understand the challenges of running a business, much less your mental health
  • being surrounded by more successful people, who appear to have their shit together

My clients are often driven by perfection and pleasing people:

  • setting high standards for yourself and others, which are often unobtainable, leaving you dissatisfied with your own work
  • constant pressure to get things right first time, often leading to procrastination
  • wanting to do things yourself and an inability to delegate to others
  • find yourself being picky of others work and yet you find it hard to be criticised yourself
  • constantly aware of others moods and keen not to negatively impact people, even if it means selling yourself short
  • avoid conflict and when it arises you struggle to manage it
  • difficult to form and maintain authentic relationships or friendships

Studies suggest 30% of entrepreneurs identify as having experienced depression and a further 27% identify as experiencing anxiety.

That’s marginally higher than the average 1 in 4 adults in the UK who experience a mental health problem each year. I believe we achieve what we achieve not in spite of but because of these mental health challenges, which are often the fuel for building our success. Yet when we arrive and often surpass our goals we are left feeling empty and exhausted by the battle against ourselves which it took to get us here. The work you’ve put in was meant to make you feel happier and it hasn’t.

What most people do when faced with stress, anxiety or depression is wait until it gets so bad they can’t see a way out, they take medication to alleviate the symptoms, or they wait for treatment to discuss the past and how they got here. And for most people, none of that works.

  • You’re managing side effects when you should be managing your recovery
  • Waiting delays your progress and creates more bad coping habits
  • You are focusing on the past when your life is in the future
  • You are not learning new tools and techniques for dealing with future challenges

At last, there’s some good news, I found a solution. I recognise this isn’t going to be easy, but it isn’t impossible.

I discovered life coaching having experienced stress, anxiety, and depression in my teenage years and throughout my twenties, having tried all the usual routes to deal with these challenges.

I had build and was maintaining a successful career in finance, gaining recognition, promotions, and rewards, and I was a high valued and respected member of the leadership team. At the same time, I was studying for multiple HR, Training and Coaching qualifications.

Behind closed doors, I was on anti-depressants, and more medication to take the edge off my OCD. I had a series of counselling sessions and now understood why I was unhappy.

The problem was… I still felt depressed and I was still living in the sterile environment I’d built for myself, and no-one could tell me how to beat it. I knew there had to be another way to overcome my challenges and that’s when I discovered life coaching.

I have a unique perspective on mental health, understanding it from the inside out, and creating the following results with clients.

  • Ability to see the future clearly and have a plan of action on how to achieve this, living and working proactively and productively
  • Letting go of the negative emotions and events from the past, and breaking free from the beliefs you have about yourself which hold you back

I start my work with all my clients by first having a Discovery Call.

This discreet, confidential, and private call is an opportunity to review how you would like coaching to impact your life. We’ll discuss the changes you want to make and the goals you wants to achieve. You’ll gain a greater understanding of the role of coaching and be in the best position to make a decision about using coaching as the solution to achieve the life you desire and deserve.

It’s a 30-minute individual coaching session via Skype or telephone and I offer flexible session times, including evenings and weekends. After the call, I provide a recommendation report and proposal and where appropriate, an invitation to start coaching with me.
